MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United States military carried out an airstrike on Sunday targeting ISIS militants entrenched in the Al Miskad Mountain of Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region, Somali state television reported.
The operation was conducted in coordination with Somalia’s federal government and comes as regional forces intensify efforts to eliminate remaining ISIS elements hiding in the rugged northeastern terrain.
A senior regional military official told reporters the strikes began at dawn and continued throughout the day, focusing on militant hideouts within the mountain range. He said that Puntland security forces had encircled the targeted area and were closing in on the remaining fighters.
Puntland forces have been engaged in sustained operations against ISIS in the region for several months. Although significant territory has been reclaimed, the campaign to fully dismantle the group’s presence in the area remains ongoing.
Military analysts caution that the effort to eradicate ISIS from the Al Miskad Mountains may still require considerable time due to the militants’ entrenchment in the harsh, mountainous landscape.
