Puntland, Jubaland leaders meet amid election dispute with Somali president

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Puntland State President Saeed Abdullahi Deni hosted Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe in Garowe town on Sunday, as the two regional leaders strengthened their alliance against Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud amid growing tensions over upcoming elections.

The meeting comes at a critical time, with both Puntland and Jubaland opposing Mogadishu’s proposed electoral model, which they claim is a unilateral move not supported by Somalia’s broader political stakeholders.

Deni and Madobe previously joined forces against former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo during the 2020-2022 election crisis, successfully blocking his attempt to extend his term and influencing his defeat in the 2022 indirect presidential election.

Now, they are aligning once again—this time against President Mohamud, whom they accuse of pursuing a centralized election process reminiscent of Farmaajo’s controversial policies. Their opposition is backed by other political leaders in Mogadishu, signaling a deepening rift between the federal government and key regional states.
