Al-Shabaab captures town in central Somalia, continues rapid territorial gains

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab seized control of El Qohle, a town in central Somalia, on Sunday, continuing a series of rapid territorial advances that have seen the group recapture key areas over recent months.

In a statement via its affiliated media channels, Al-Shabaab claimed that 31 government soldiers and clan militia fighters were killed in a fierce gun battle. The group said its fighters are now in full control of El Qohle.

This latest capture follows the recent fall of El Hareeri, another strategic town where Al-Shabaab has reportedly repelled multiple counterattacks by Somali government forces and allied clan militias.

El Qohle holds symbolic significance. It was the epicenter of a major clan uprising against Al-Shabaab in early 2022, an offensive that had federal government backing and U.S. air support. A prominent clan leader who led resistance against the group was killed there during the fighting. The latest developments suggest that the gains made during the 2022 anti-Al-Shabaab campaign have largely been reversed.

Following the fall of El Qohle, Al-Shabaab is now reportedly advancing toward Moqokori, one of the last remaining towns in Hiran region outside of the group’s control. Moqokori was recaptured by allied forces in 2022, but its status is now under threat as militants continue their offensive.

The rapid pace of Al-Shabaab’s territorial expansion raises fresh concerns over the effectiveness of ongoing counterterrorism efforts and the ability of Somali and allied forces to hold regained ground.
