MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s former spy chief, Fahad Yasin, said on Thursday that Somaliland did not receive any recognition from Israel, despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announcing formal recognition in a video call with the breakaway region’s president on Friday.
“It is a tragedy when a leader guides his people toward a course he neither comprehends politically nor legally. Somaliland did not receive any recognition from Israel because such recognition was neither passed by the executive nor by the Knesset, and even the announced recognition is not grounded in Israel’s charters or laws,” Yasin said in a post on X.
He added: “As celebrations occur under the Irro administration; they have merely obtained Netanyahu’s signature, which is a political decision and nothing more than an administrative decree. If Netanyahu leaves office or any new developments arise in the region, a new decree could be issued to contradict it [the recognition], or it could simply be left in silence.”
Addressing the people of Somaliland, who have been celebrating the announcement since Friday, Yasin said: “The people of Somaliland should understand that the Irro administration has brought them nothing of legal significance and has merely played upon their euphoria.”
Somaliland, a self-declared independent region in northern Somalia, has sought international recognition for decades. Netanyahu’s announcement sparked celebrations in the region, but Yasin’s comments highlight continuing questions about the legal and political status of the claimed recognition
