MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A military helicopter belonging to the African Union, carrying eight people, crashed at Mogadishu International Airport in Somalia’s capital on Wednesday, Somali Civil Aviation Authority director Ahmed Moalim Hassan said.
The Mi-24 helicopter had taken off from the US drone base in Bellidogle and crashed on the northeastern runway of the airport, located in Mogadishu’s Waberi district. Debris from the crash scattered onto other runways, causing disruptions to airport operations.
Following the crash, a fire broke out on the aircraft but was successfully extinguished. The fate of those onboard remains unknown. Authorities have announced that an investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the crash.
