MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The commander of Somalia’s presidential guards has been arrested after he had deployed troops to seize the Prime Minister’s office, in what government officials described as a “failed coup attempt” orchestrated by the President.

Somalia’s army chief Odowa Yusuf Rage dismissed Hassan Adan Dhi’is before ordering his arrest for taking instructions from Farmajo to carry out military takeover of the Prime Minister’s office. The President had accused Roble of looting public land belonging to the coastguard hours earlier.

Colonel Ahmed Gelle has been picked as the new commander of the presidential guards, a day after power struggle between Somalia’s most powerful leaders reached new alarming heights.

On Monday, Somalia’s Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur asked the armed forces to support an ongoing manhunt for organizers of “failed coup” and urged them to begin taking orders from the office of the Prime Minister.
