MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least six mortar shells struck the heavily fortified Halane base in Mogadishu on Tuesday, sending shockwaves across the Somali capital as militant attacks intensify.
The explosions, which echoed across the city, targeted the secure base camp adjacent to Aden Adde International Airport. The base houses several foreign diplomatic missions, including those of the United Nations, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Emergency sirens wailed near the airport perimeter following the barrage. While the mortars reportedly landed inside the base, the precise impact location and extent of the damage remain unclear. There was no immediate confirmation of casualties.
The Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab swiftly claimed responsibility for the attack, asserting it had targeted the Halane camp— one of the most secure areas within Mogadishu’s “Green Zone.”
Tuesday’s strike marks the fourth attack on the base in recent weeks and underscores a worsening security landscape in the capital. It comes just days after a suicide bombing outside a military training facility killed dozens of young recruits queuing to enlist in the Somali National Army.
The Somali government, backed by African Union peacekeepers and international partners, is grappling with a sustained insurgency as al-Shabaab intensifies operations in both urban centers and rural areas.
