MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Mortar shells struck the airstrip in Somalia’s Baidoa town Friday just as Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud landed for his first visit since his government’s military operation ousted the regional president earlier this week.
Videos circulating online showed the president’s security detail swiftly closing in around him before ushering him into a bulletproof vehicle. Explosions were reported near the airport at the time.
The al-Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had targeted Baidoa airport with mortar fire aimed at the president and his delegation.
Mohamud’s visit comes days after the federal government appointed an interim leader for Southwest state in a move that has drawn sharp criticism. Opponents say the decision violates both federal and regional constitutions, following the ousting of regional President Abdiasis Laftagaren in a military operation.
Despite the tensions, the president is expected to meet local officials and political figures to discuss the way forward and assess conditions in the town. The federal government is planning elections in the coming weeks, allowing residents of the region to choose a new president.
