Puntland and Jubaland leaders form united front against Somalia president’s electoral push

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – In a significant political development, the leaders of Puntland and Jubaland have agreed to launch a united political campaign opposing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s push for a one-person, one-vote electoral system, Caasimada Online news website reported on Tuesday.

Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe” arrived in Garowe earlier this week to a warm welcome and has since held extensive talks with Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni. The two leaders, former allies during the 2021 electoral standoff at the end of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s term, have now renewed their political alliance.

Their discussions centered on challenging President Mohamud’s controversial electoral reforms and constitutional amendments. Both Puntland and Jubaland oppose the shift from Somalia’s traditional indirect clan-based electoral model to a direct voting system. Critics argue that the proposed changes are illegitimate and lack broad consensus among key stakeholders.

This renewed alliance marks the first time in years that Deni and Madobe are on the same side of Somalia’s divided political landscape. Previously, Madobe had aligned with President Mohamud following his election, while Deni remained in opposition.

According to sources close to the talks, a formal communiqué outlining the outcomes of the meetings is expected to be released soon.

Political analysts believe President Deni is preparing to contest Somalia’s upcoming presidential election, with strong backing from Jubaland.

Despite mounting opposition from Puntland, Jubaland, and an alliance of former officials based in Mogadishu, President Mohamud continues to enjoy the support of other federal member states, including Southwest, Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and Khatumo.
