Puntland leader warns against power vacuum as Somalia faces uncertain political transition

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Puntland’s President Saeed Abdullahi Deni has warned that his administration will not accept a political or leadership vacuum as Somalia’s federal government approaches the end of its term without clear plans for elections.

Deni said Puntland, founded to spearhead the re-establishment of a united and stable Somalia, would not tolerate any unilateral attempts to alter the country’s agreed legal framework, particularly the provisional constitution.

He emphasised that the recently formed Future of Somalia Council — a coalition of Puntland and Jubaland leaders alongside opposition figures — carries the responsibility of steering the nation away from political collapse.

The Puntland leader also commended Somaliland’s President for initiating a peace summit in Erigavo, Sanaag region, describing it as an important step towards lasting stability in the area. He reaffirmed Puntland’s readiness to maintain peaceful relations with neighbouring Somaliland and Galmudug but made no mention of the newly declared Northeastern State of Somalia, a federal government-backed administration that borders Puntland.

Deni’s remarks come amid growing tensions between Mogadishu and some federal member states over the country’s political roadmap, as the term of the federal government nears expiry without a clear electoral process in place.
