MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Abdullahi Sheikh Hassan, a prominent Somali opposition leader, warned on Wednesday that the opposition would take up arms if President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud remains in office beyond his legal term without a consensus-based election. Ismail held the President responsible for any resulting violence.
In an interview with Shabelle TV, Hassan asserted that Somalis remain heavily armed and would resort to force if Mohamud clings to power unlawfully.
“What makes his orders legitimate and him the President is the law—not his clan. Once his legal term ends, he becomes an ordinary citizen who should not be obeyed,” Hassan declared.
The opposition leader also explained why opposition figures boycotted a government-hosted meeting in Mogadishu, accusing Mohamud of insincerity.
“The President doesn’t need recommendations—he has already made up his mind. He pretends to listen to the people’s advice only to dismiss it and enforce his own decisions,” Hassan claimed.
Opposition leaders have demanded an inclusive national dialogue—rather than limited consultations—to resolve contentious electoral and governance disputes.
