MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali opposition leader and Member of Parliament Abdirahman Abdishakur on Thursday accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration of empowering Al-Shabaab militants through strategic missteps and failed leadership, warning that the group is now stronger and more emboldened than at any point in recent years.
Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, Abdishakur said Al-Shabaab has significantly expanded its capabilities, seizing substantial caches of weapons under the current government’s watch. He asserted that what was once a guerrilla insurgency now operates with heightened morale and operational momentum, capitalizing on the military’s overextension in hostile and unfamiliar terrain.
Despite the Somali army’s access to superior weaponry, personnel, and international air support, Abdishakur said the force has been strategically undermined by flawed leadership and poor decision-making, resulting in a series of avoidable setbacks.
He urged President Mohamud to urgently engage opposition figures and federal member states to address mounting political dysfunction and refocus efforts on countering the insurgency before his mandate to convene broad-based political dialogue expires in a year.
Abdishakur also lashed out at parliamentary speaker Adan Madobe, accusing him of misconduct during a chaotic session on Wednesday that descended into disorder. He called for Madobe’s removal through a parliamentary vote, citing unfitness to lead.
