Somalia appoints interim Southwest leader after regional president ousted

MOGADISHU (Somaligaurdian) – Somalia’s prime minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, has named his deputy, Jibril Abdirashid, as the interim leader of Southwest State, days after the regional president, Abdiasis Laftagaren, was ousted in a military operation that, according to reports, was supported by Turkish drones.

Mr. Abdirashid comes from the Digil sub-clan of the Digil and Mirifle clan family, which largely inhabits the Southwest region. His selection appears to reflect a careful political calculation. As figures aligned with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud compete for the vacancy, Mr. Abdirashid is regarded as a relatively neutral choice – seen as lacking direct ambition for the role and, notably, not drawn from the Mirifle sub-clan that has traditionally held the position.

His appointment comes amid rising tension, as the federal government moves to contain unrest following the leadership change. Videos circulating from Baidoa show widespread looting, pointing to a rapidly deteriorating security environment.

Reports have also suggested that troops who entered the city killed several former regional security officers in apparent acts of reprisal, despite earlier assurances from authorities that such abuses would not occur.
