MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 40 people were killed and more than 150 wounded as fighting between Somaliland troops and clan militias continued in the town of Lasanod for the third day in a row.
An official speaking on behalf of clan militias battling Somaliland troops in the town claimed victory and said they had regained control of many parts of the town on Wednesday.
Mayor of Lasanod told media that Somaliland troops had shelled hospitals, mosques and other public places, causing civilian casualties and massive destruction. Authorities in Hargeisa were also accused of blocking ambulances carrying wounded people from reaching the nearby town of Garowe.
A number of military officials, who come from the town, defected from the Somaliland army over the past days as tensions heightened.
Somalia’s President and international partners called for an immediate ceasefire and probe into mass killing of civilians in the town.
