Somalia government says it is open to dialogue to break election impasse

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s government said Tuesday it remains open to dialogue with opposition leaders and the presidents of Puntland and Jubaland as it seeks to break a long-running impasse over elections.

In a statement, the government said it regretted an incident in which flights carrying advance teams from Puntland and Jubaland – including members of regional presidential guards – were turned back midair on Sunday. It said the episode, and the subsequent delay of planned election talks, was unfortunate.

The federal government reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the dispute with political stakeholders through dialogue, saying it aims to reach an outcome acceptable to all sides while safeguarding the country’s unity and sovereignty.
