MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday received a briefing from the Ministry of Interior and the National Disaster Management Agency regarding the worsening drought conditions in the Awdal region, located in the western part of Somaliland.
Following the briefing, the Prime Minister ordered an emergency humanitarian response and called on Somali businesspeople, relevant government agencies, and the international community to support those affected by the severe drought.
The situation raises questions about the feasibility of delivering aid to the region, as Somaliland— which unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991—does not permit Somali federal government officials or institutions to operate within its territory. Somaliland continues to seek international recognition as a separate state, although it remains unrecognized.
It remains unclear how Somalia’s federal institutions intend to provide direct assistance to Awdal, given the political and operational limitations on the ground.
