Somalia president agrees to opposition talks on constitutional review and elections

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The office of Somalia’s president announced on Wednesday that a meeting with opposition leaders has been agreed upon to open formal talks on key national issues, including the constitutional review process and the conduct of an inclusive, consensus-based election.

This marks a significant shift from the earlier stance held by Villa Somalia, which had previously stated that any engagement with the opposition would be limited to the president merely hearing their advice. The latest development indicates a softening of that position, with the new agenda now allowing for debate on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s controversial constitutional amendments and his push for a direct election model.

The change is seen by many as a step toward fostering broader political dialogue amid rising tensions over the government’s election plans.
