MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region have acquired four helicopters to bolster counter-insurgency operations in the rugged Al Miskad mountains, where ISIS militants have established entrenched positions, Caasimada Online news website reported on Tuesday.
Mohamud Ahmed Fadhigo, spokesman for the Puntland security taskforce leading the “Hilaac” operation, said the aircraft—procured solely by Puntland—will be deployed for precision strikes, rapid troop deployment in inaccessible terrain, casualty evacuation, and logistical support.
He did not disclose the source of funding for the multimillion-dollar purchase, leaving open the possibility of external assistance.
The United Arab Emirates, a key regional ally, has in recent months increased its footprint in Puntland, including the installation of an Israeli-manufactured radar system at Bosaso airport, which has been transformed into a strategic logistical hub supporting its operations across the Red Sea corridor, including Yemen and Sudan.
Abu Dhabi has also frequently carried out targeted airstrikes against ISIS strongholds in Puntland’s mountainous hinterland, providing crucial air support to prevent the militants from consolidating defensive positions and allowing regional forces to maintain operational momentum.
