Somalia’s ex-president accuses incumbent of dismantling political council for personal gain

Farmajo

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s former president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo on Wednesday issued a scathing rebuke of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing the incumbent of dismantling the National Consultative Council (NCC) to serve partisan ambitions, in a move he warned could derail the country’s fragile state-building trajectory.

In a statement released from Doha, where he has remained in political self-imposed exile, Farmajo alleged that President Mohamud is seeking to restructure the NCC—originally a neutral platform for federal and regional coordination—into an instrument of personal political consolidation.

Farmajo called for an immediate national dialogue involving all political stakeholders, reiterating earlier promises made by President Mohamud to convene such a forum.

He further urged federal member states—particularly Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and Southwest—to resist endorsing what he termed a personalized political venture and instead push for the reintegration of Puntland and Jubaland into the NCC framework, emphasizing that national cohesion hinges on full regional representation.

The NCC, once central to harmonizing relations between Mogadishu and federal member states, has faced growing criticism over its diminished inclusivity and perceived erosion of authority under Mohamud’s administration.

There was no immediate response from Villa Somalia to Farmajo’s allegations.
