MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s federal government has reengaged with former Jubaland Security Minister Abdirashid Janan—previously implicated in serious human rights violations—as part of efforts to assert full control over the Gedo region, amid escalating tensions with Jubaland authorities.
On Monday, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre held talks with Janan in Mogadishu to discuss the worsening security situation in Gedo, particularly around the contested town of Beled Hawo, located near the Kenyan border. Sources close to the talks said discussions centered on strategies to establish federal authority across the region and ensure the success of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s election plans.
In a related development, the federal government has deployed additional troops to strategic locations in Gedo this week, with a particular focus on Beled Hawo. Local sources report that Jubaland forces still maintain control over parts of the town and have recently increased military maneuvers, including movements near a small but strategic airstrip.
The federal-Jubaland standoff has persisted for years, rooted in disputes over regional autonomy, control of security forces, and electoral authority. Gedo remains a flashpoint in these tensions, seen by the federal government as critical to securing national political objectives, while Jubaland regards it as an integral part of its territory.
