MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday welcomed a decision by US President Joe Biden to deploy hundreds of special forces back to the war-torn Horn of Africa nation.
His office said in a tweet that Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appreciated Biden “for authorizing the deployment of American troops to Somalia”. “The US has always been a reliable partner in our quest to stability and fight against terrorism,” it added.
Mohamud, who was elected on Sunday in a vote held behind blast walls at an airport hanger, promised to do more in restoring political stability but would also need to tackle growing threats from Al-Shabaab which controls vast swathes of territory in the south and central regions of the country.
