Somalia’s opposition to hold major summit as election talks collapse

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s opposition Future Council announced Friday it will convene a major summit on April 10, uniting a wide spectrum of political leaders to determine their next steps after stalled talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud failed to break the electoral deadlock.

Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, a council leader, said all avenues to engage Mohamud in good-faith negotiations have been exhausted. With the president refusing to yield, the council now plans to explore alternative measures to safeguard the nation as his term ends in May.

Puntland leader Saeed Abdullahi Deni, also a council member, called for an end to further negotiations, describing them as a waste of time. He accused Mohamud of maintaining a rigid position and a detached demeanor during discussions on critical national issues, leaving no room for compromise.

The announcement comes days after talks between the council and the federal government, convened under international pressure, collapsed. Observers warn that the ongoing dispute could undermine Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab and erode progress in state-building efforts.
