MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday delivered what appeared to be a warning of possible military action against Jubaland and Puntland regional states, declaring that no part of the country lies beyond the reach of the national army.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 66th anniversary of the Somali National Army, Mohamud said government forces are prepared to carry out special operations anywhere in the country when directed by federal authorities. His remarks were widely interpreted as a broad signal to regional administrations amid rising tensions.
The comments come weeks after federal forces moved into the town of Baidoa, where authorities removed Southwest state President Abdiasis Laftagaren and installed an interim leader tasked with overseeing a political transition and organizing a universal suffrage election.
Mohamud’s statement also follows recent warnings from Puntland President Saeed Abdullahi Deni, who has instructed regional forces to remain on alert against a possible federal military intervention. Deni cautioned that the operation carried out in Southwest state could be replicated elsewhere, and accused the federal government of seeking to dismantle Somalia’s federal system in favor of a more centralized structure.
Together, the developments underscore deepening strains between Mogadishu and regional administrations, raising fresh concerns about the stability of the country’s fragile federal framework.
