MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday formally received the credentials of Ethiopia’s newly appointed ambassador to Mogadishu, Suleiman Dedefo—a figure whose past rhetoric has stoked controversy.
Dedefo, an outspoken advocate for Somaliland’s secession and recognition, has frequently lambasted Somalia’s federal government on social media, branding it as ineffective and fractured. His X feed has been marked by vitriolic criticism of Somalia’s unity and statehood, making his diplomatic role in Mogadishu all the more unexpected.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Dedefo announced the presentation of his credentials to President Mohamud, highlighting discussions aimed at “strengthening diplomatic ties, boosting economic relations, and enhancing security cooperation.” This public declaration contrasts starkly with his previous disparaging remarks against the Somali federal authorities.
Earlier last year, Dedefo referred to the Somali government as “air pirates” and an “irresponsible group” amid a tense airspace dispute between Mogadishu and Somaliland. The dispute nearly led to a mid-air collision involving Ethiopian and Qatari national carriers. Such language underscores the ambassador’s entrenched position in Somaliland’s separatist cause, which Somalia’s federal government deems a threat to its territorial integrity.
Tensions between the two capitals intensified following a 2024 memorandum of understanding between Somaliland and Ethiopia, under which Addis Ababa secured a parcel of land on the Red Sea for a naval base in exchange for recognizing Hargeisa —an arrangement strongly condemned by Mogadishu. Dedefo emerged as one of the prominent Ethiopian voices supporting this accord on social media, further inflaming hostilities and launching a sustained campaign of disparagement against Mogadishu.
The decision by President Mohamud to receive an envoy with such a contentious background has drawn sharp criticism at home. Many observers and opposition voices denounce the move as undiplomatic and undermining Somalia’s sovereignty. Accusations of double standards have surfaced, questioning the administration’s commitment to national unity amid ongoing separatist pressures.
