MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has launched a strong commendation of the Western nations that have formally recognised the State of Palestine, hailing their decisions as pivotal milestones in advancing regional stability and reaffirming the historic rights of the Palestinian people.
The Somali leader’s endorsement came after attending an international conference on Palestine held on Monday, co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia. The summit focused on advancing a two-state solution to the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Notably absent were the United States and key G7 allies such as Germany and Italy – nations that maintain close diplomatic ties with Somalia’s federal government.
In a statement released by Villa Somalia, the President reaffirmed Somalia’s enduring solidarity with the Palestinian people and government. “The Federal Government of Somalia has consistently stood with Palestine, being among the earliest countries to recognise the State of Palestine and steadfast in its commitment to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state,” the statement read.
Recent developments have seen a wave of Western countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Australia, and Portugal, formally recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. Other countries – including Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Andorra, and San Marino – are also reportedly preparing to extend recognition.
President Mohamud praised these moves as instrumental in fostering peace and security across the Middle East, underscoring Somalia’s unwavering support for Palestinian self-determination.
