Somaliland accuses Somali govt of planning troop deployment to Sanaag region

Somaliland

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland’s Information Minister, Ahmed Yasin Sheikh Ali, on Tuesday accused Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of planning to deploy federal troops to Sanaag region, alleging an attempt to destabilize a peaceful area as Al-Shabaab militants make territorial gains elsewhere.

In a press conference, the minister claimed that President Mohamud is seeking to provoke conflict in northern Somalia in an effort to undermine Somaliland’s pursuit of international recognition, which he said is “drawing closer by the day.”

Similar concerns have also been voiced by authorities in Puntland, who have warned of increased military activity in contested regions. However, Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, dismissed the allegations as “baseless fabrications,” asserting that the government remains focused on combating terrorism and maintaining national unity.
