HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland authorities on Sunday strongly condemned remarks by Somalia’s Defence Minister, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, who called on Saudi Arabia to invade the self-declared republic and mount an intervention similar to the one it led in Yemen, which dismantled separatist forces aligned with the Southern Transitional Council (STC) under Aidarous Al-Zoubaidi.
In a sharply worded response, Somaliland rejected the comments as dangerous and unlawful, warning that such rhetoric risked destabilising the Horn of Africa.
“Such statements constitute a serious and irresponsible escalation, and a clear violation of the United Nations Charter and fundamental principles of international law. Somaliland is not under Mogadishu’s authority. It lawfully restored its sovereignty in 1991 within its internationally recognized 1960 borders and has since maintained peace, stability and democratic governance,” the Somaliland Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It added: “The Government of Republic of Somaliland holds the Somalia government fully responsible for the consequences of this inflammatory rhetoric, calls on international partners to reject any such appeals, and reaffirms its commitment to peace while reserving its inherent right to self-defense under international law.”
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central government in Mogadishu. While it has maintained its own government, currency and security structures for more than three decades, it remains unrecognised by the international community.
