Somaliland president discusses defense and security cooperation with US delegation

Somaliland

HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi of Somaliland held talks on Thursday with a high-level US delegation, including diplomats and military officials, amid speculation about a potential US military base in the strategic port city of Berbera.

The discussions focused on strengthening defense and security cooperation, according to Somaliland’s state-run television. While specific details remain undisclosed, the visit signals growing US interest in the breakaway region, which has been seeking international recognition since 1991.

The delegation’s tour of Berbera—home to a major port and a UAE-funded military facility—has also fueled rumors of Washington’s plans to expand its military footprint in the Horn of Africa. Neither side has confirmed such intentions.
