Somaliland president donates one-month salary to support drought relief in Awdal region

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro announced on Monday that he, along with his vice president and cabinet members, will donate one month’s salary to support relief efforts for communities severely affected by drought in Awdal region.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa, President Irro acknowledged the worsening humanitarian situation in Awdal, where tens of thousands of residents are facing food and water shortages due to prolonged drought. He appealed for urgent assistance to avert further suffering and potential loss of life.

“The situation in Awdal is dire,” said President Irro. “We must act swiftly to provide life-saving support. My government is committed to leading by example.”

He called on Somaliland’s business community, intellectuals, and diaspora to join the national effort by contributing essential supplies such as food, clean water, livestock feed, and medical aid.

President Irro also urged the international community—and particularly Somaliland’s development partners—to step in with timely assistance, emphasizing that swift action could save lives and restore hope for those affected.

The president’s remarks came just days after the Somali Federal Government in Mogadishu also warned of a severe humanitarian crisis in Awdal and appealed for international aid. However, the federal government’s ability to provide support remains uncertain, as the region is under Somaliland’s control, and Hargeisa does not permit Mogadishu-based officials to operate within its territory. While Mogadishu has expressed its intent to contribute to relief efforts, logistical and political obstacles may hinder direct involvement.
