Somaliland president meets US AFRICOM officials to discuss regional security

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi received senior officials from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Hargeisa on Monday, as part of ongoing efforts to bolster regional cooperation and security in the Horn of Africa.

According to a statement released by the presidency on X (formerly Twitter), the talks centred on security collaboration, democratic governance, and Somaliland’s strategic role in promoting peace and stability in the region.

Abdullahi “held a strategic meeting with senior U.S. Africa Command officials to discuss regional security, enhanced cooperation, and Somaliland’s vital role in advancing peace, stability, and democracy in the Horn of Africa,” his office said.

The president also expressed gratitude to American lawmakers for their engagement with Somaliland’s longstanding push for international recognition.

“The President also extended his deep appreciation to the U.S. Congress for its continued support of Somaliland’s cause and welcomed the encouraging shifts in U.S. foreign policy, particularly with regard to Somaliland and Somalia, reaffirming Somaliland’s position as a trusted and reliable partner in the region,” the statement added.

The visit by AFRICOM officials comes amid increasing international interest in Somaliland, a self-declared republic that has operated with de facto independence from Somalia since 1991 but remains unrecognised by the United Nations.
