Somaliland president offers US military base and minerals deal in exchange for recognition

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, has said his self-declared republic is prepared to offer the United States a military base near the entrance to the Red Sea and access to critical minerals in exchange for formal diplomatic recognition.

In an interview with Bloomberg on Monday, President Irro expressed interest in reaching an agreement with Washington to secure official recognition for Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has yet to be recognised internationally.

“If the US is interested to land in Somaliland they are most welcome,” Abdullahi said, adding that his administration would also be prepared to offer a deal involving critical minerals, including lithium.

He revealed he had recently held talks with US diplomats and military officials in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. However, in response to growing speculation, the US State Department reiterated its long-standing position, stating it recognised only “one Somalia” and continued to support the country’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

“We discussed ways and means to collaborate in security, in trade and in regional stability,” President Irro said.

When asked about the possibility of establishing a US military base in the territory, he added: “We are now still discussing issues. We are looking forward to that discussion bearing fruits in the future.”

Somaliland, strategically located along the Gulf of Aden, has sought to capitalise on its geographical significance and untapped mineral resources as part of its ongoing campaign for international legitimacy.
