MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi on Sunday presided over the foundation-laying ceremony for a new $22 million hospital funded by Taiwan, marking a significant step in strengthening health infrastructure in the breakaway region.
The Taiwan Medical Facility, to be constructed on the grounds of Hargeisa Group Hospital, is designed to address the growing demand for advanced medical services in Somaliland. The existing hospital, the only major public health institution in the capital, has struggled to meet the needs of the city’s population and surrounding regions.
The project will be financed and built by Taiwan, which has become one of Somaliland’s closest international partners in recent years. The new hospital is expected to feature state-of-the-art medical units, a research centre, and training facilities for doctors and health professionals. The initiative aims to reduce the number of Somalilanders travelling abroad for treatment and to enhance the region’s capacity to deliver specialised healthcare.
Senior Somaliland government officials and representatives from Taiwan attended the ceremony, underscoring the deepening ties between Hargeisa and Taipei. Taiwan has supported Somaliland in a range of sectors including education, technology, governance, and security, as well as providing scholarships and technical assistance.
Once completed, the Taiwan Medical Facility is expected to become one of the most advanced healthcare institutions in the Horn of Africa, serving as both a treatment and training hub for the region’s medical community.
