MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Turkish F-16 fighter jets and attack helicopters thundered across the skies of Mogadishu on Sunday, marking the 66th anniversary of the founding of Somalia’s army with a striking aerial display.
At least four Turkish F-16s swept overhead, accompanied by a number of attack helicopters, in a coordinated show of support for Somalia’s military. The display underscored Turkey’s continuing role in arming and equipping Somali forces as the country works to regain its footing after more than three decades of civil war.
On the ground, the ceremony carried the same sense of scale and symbolism. Columns of armored personnel carriers rolled through the Ministry of Defense, a majority of them donated by Turkey to bolster the government’s campaign against insurgents.
