Israel says it struck Iran as nuclear tensions escalate

TEHRAN (Somaliguardian) Israel carried out what it described as a pre-emptive strike on Iran on Saturday, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions and casting fresh doubt on prospects for reviving diplomatic efforts over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

According to Israeli officials, the operation was intended to counter what they see as growing security threats from Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile activities. The move follows a brief but intense 12-day air conflict between the two countries in June and comes amid repeated warnings from both Israel and the United States that further action could follow if Tehran continued advancing its weapons programmes.

“The State of Israel launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel,” Defence Minister Israel Katz said.

Iranian media reported explosions in Tehran on Saturday, though details about the extent of the damage were not immediately clear.

The latest confrontation unfolds against the backdrop of renewed diplomatic engagement. Washington and Tehran resumed talks in February, aiming to resolve their long-running standoff through negotiation and to prevent a wider military clash that could destabilize the Middle East.

Israel has consistently argued that any agreement between the United States and Iran must go beyond limiting uranium enrichment. Israeli leaders have pressed for the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and have urged Washington to incorporate restrictions on Iran’s missile development into any deal.

Tehran, for its part, has indicated willingness to accept constraints on its nuclear activities in exchange for relief from international sanctions. However, Iranian officials have firmly rejected any attempt to tie negotiations over the nuclear programme to their missile capabilities.

Iran has also made clear that it would respond forcefully to any military action against it. It has cautioned neighboring states that host U.S. forces that American bases could become targets in the event of a U.S. strike.

In June, the United States directly joined Israeli operations targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, marking the most significant U.S. military action against Iran since the establishment of the Islamic Republic. Iran responded by firing missiles toward the Al Udeid air base in Qatar, the largest U.S. military installation in the region.

Western governments argue that Iran’s ballistic missile development poses a serious threat to regional security and could eventually provide a delivery system for nuclear weapons. Iranian authorities deny pursuing atomic arms, maintaining that their nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes only.
