MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s parliamentary speaker Adan Mohamed Nur on Sunday imposed salary reductions on a number of MPs and suspended others from attending the next five sessions as a penalty for their alleged involvement in the recent disorder within the parliamentary hall.
The speaker of Parliament accused the MPs of deliberately refusing to sign the attendance register and of inciting chaos and disrupting a recent session, during which the approval of a contentious election body appointed by the cabinet took place.
Among the MPs suspended from attending parliamentary sessions for five consecutive sittings is Hassan Abdi Ismail (Hassan Firinbi), who was captured in a video physically assaulting a soldier stationed near the speaker’s area during the unrest.
The bulk of MPs subjected to salary cuts and suspensions hail from Puntland and Jubaland, regions whose leaders are in open conflict with the federal government, to which the speaker remains firmly loyal.
