MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in Somaliland on Monday welcomed remarks by US President Donald Trump indicating that his administration is examining the possibility of formally recognising the breakaway region in northern Somalia.
Speaking last week, Trump was asked whether he supported recognition of Somaliland, particularly in light of reports that the self-declared republic had offered to host Palestinian refugees from Gaza in return for international recognition. “We are looking into that right now,” he said.
In a statement, Somaliland presidency spokesman Hussein Deyr said Mr Trump’s comments acknowledged the region’s long-standing commitment to peace, democracy, and regional stability.
“The remarks made by President Trump on 8 August 2025 recognise Somaliland’s 34-year history of upholding peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development,” Mr Deyr said. “His words also highlight the strategic importance of Somaliland in maintaining security across the Horn of Africa and safeguarding key shipping lanes in the Red Sea.”
He added that continued engagement by the White House, Congress, and the Pentagon had “strengthened the cooperative relationship and mutual respect between the peoples of Somaliland and the United States.”
Somaliland, a former British protectorate, declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central government in Mogadishu. It has since operated with its own government, currency, and institutions, but has yet to receive international recognition.
The issue of Somaliland’s status remains sensitive, particularly for Somalia’s federal authorities, who view the region as an integral part of the country.
