Somalia arrests hotel manager over meeting held to support Jubaland leader

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s government arrested the manager of the upscale Maka Al Mukarama hotel in Mogadishu for permitting a meeting that supported the controversial re-election of Jubaland’s president to a third term and for providing authorities with misleading information about the gathering in advance, Caasimada Online reported on Wednesday.

Authorities, acting on a tip-off regarding the gathering, inquired with the hotel manager, who firmly assured them that no political discussions would take place, emphasizing that a separate meeting in support of Jubaland’s president had been rejected by the establishment.

When the government later discovered that the meeting had been convened to support the re-election of the Jubaland president—an act deemed unconstitutional and tantamount to national treason—security forces apprehended the hotel manager on two charges: permitting the event to take place in his establishment and providing misleading information to authorities when questioned about the gathering.

In a bid to prevent the meeting from spreading on social media, the Somali government compelled media personnel who recorded the event to delete the footage and arrested several clan leaders in retaliation for their support of the Jubaland president, as Mogadishu intensifies its relentless efforts to remove him from power.
