MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali police announced on Monday the arrest of a security officer who was captured on video brutally assaulting a woman near Sayidka Junction, close to the presidential palace in Mogadishu.
In a brief statement posted on Facebook, authorities confirmed that the man, who was dressed in military uniform, has been taken into custody and will be brought before a court for violating the human rights of a Somali citizen. Police also issued a stern warning to other security personnel against engaging in similar misconduct.
The incident, which was widely circulated on social media, triggered public outrage and renewed criticism of the Somali government’s handling of security forces. While online reports alleged that the woman was beaten after refusing to be forcibly taken to a voter registration center, police have not confirmed the motive behind the assault.
