Somalia ex-president calls for ‘international probe’ into Mogadishu, Baladweyne attacks

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday called for an international investigation into attacks on the heavily fortified Halane base in Mogadishu and Hirshabelle presidential complex in Baladweyne, which killed a number of people including a staunch critic of the incumbent leader.

The incident at Adan Adde Airport in Mogadishu today and the assault in the presidential palace of Hirshabelle in the town of Baladweyne are not normal incidents and cannot be described as terrorist incidents,” former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said in a video circulated online.

Therefore, I suggest that an international probe be launched into those issues.”

Mr Mohamud said that efforts to “silence voices for the people” have been going on over the past months after authorities had earlier “closed political spaces” and that Amina was “the last muzzled voice”, in an apparent reference to Somali President and his allies. Somaliguardian has been unable to verify the claims, which had been earlier made by other opposition figures.

The former head of state sent condolences to the families of federal MP Amina Mohamed and other victims of multiple explosions in the central town of Baladweyne on Wednesday night. The MP was also one of the members of his part and traveled to the town to retain her parliament seat despite stiff challenge from an ally of the incumbent President.
