MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Senior traditional leaders from Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo region have pledged to de-escalate hostilities and seek a peaceful resolution to a years-long conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced tens of thousands of people.
Speaking during a traditional coronation ceremony held in the Somali region of Ethiopia on Monday, Garad Jama Garad Ali, the paramount leader of SSC-Khatumo, vowed that no attacks would be launched from his territory against Somaliland. In a public appeal, he urged his counterpart, Daud Suldan Mohamed, a leading figure among Somali clans in Somaliland, to offer a reciprocal commitment.
In a measured but resolute response, Suldan Mohamed pledged to exhaust all efforts to end the cyclical violence between the rival administrations. “Continued bloodshed serves no one’s interest,” he said, stressing the need for dialogue and reconciliation.
The two influential elders sealed their mutual understanding with a public handshake—an emblematic gesture signaling a preliminary but significant step towards ending a conflict that has long destabilized northern Somalia. Years of clashes between Somaliland forces and SSC-aligned militias have resulted in repeated offensives and counter-offensives, inflicting heavy civilian tolls and deepening displacement across contested areas.
Monday’s exchange marked one of the most high-profile acknowledgments by traditional authorities of the urgent need for a negotiated settlement. While no formal ceasefire agreement was announced, the commitments by both leaders were widely viewed as a critical confidence-building measure.
Diplomats and analysts say traditional leaders wield considerable influence in Somali society and their role in peacebuilding efforts could complement or even surpass those of formal political actors.
It remains to be seen whether the latest overtures will translate into lasting calm. However, observers note that the symbolic alignment of two of the region’s most senior clan figures could serve as a turning point in a conflict that has resisted resolution for years.
